Number 9 at Paekakariki in the 1890's

In early March 2003 two Civil Engineering students salvaged the frames and assorted parts of the only known remaining steam locomotive from the former Wellington & Manawatu Railway Company Ltd. The Wellington & Manawatu Railway Trust now has the task of restoring this locomotive to its former glory, we aim to have this locomotive rebuilt to mainline standards within the next decade. It is our intention to present the locomotive as she would have appeared running on the WMR between 1902 and 1908.

From this page you can follow the progress so far and also see what is planned for the future.

We have separated the rebuild project into 5 stages:

STAGE I - Salvage
STAGE II -
Rolling Chasse (frames, wheels, brake gear, valve motion, compensating gear etc)
STAGE III
- Tender (tank, bunker, bogies etc)
STAGE IV
- Boiler
STAGE V
- Final fitting out and assembly (cab, fittings, painting, etc).

These stages maybe completed in order or in tandem depending on resources available, if you would like to contribute please contact us.
